5 Public Speaking Tips for Entrepreneurs
5 Public Speaking Tips for Entrepreneurs
by Rabih El Khodr, February 10, 2013
As founder of communication training company STANDUP!, I've always been fascinated by pitching, and the ability to convey ideas with both persuasion and poise.
Yet I've seen numerous bright individuals struggle with the delivery of their ideas, due to lack of knowledge or practice. We've worked to help these participants at various workshops and trainings, most recently at the Beirut Social Innovation Camp competition, where we helped entrepreneurs prepare for their pitches.

How to Become a Great Media Spokesperson
How to Become a Great Media Spokesperson
Very few of us are born with the natural talents to speak in soundbites. Keeping answers short and concise is very difficult and often nerve-wracking when a journalist is firing away with questions or a TV camera is pointing straight at you.
Media interview techniques can be learned, however, and natural skills can always be fine-tuned. A professional media trainer can take you from being a good spokesperson to being a great one. You can become someone who easily engages an audience—whether a reporter from a national newspaper or 3,000 people at a major industry conference.

Hiring your first sales rep: 10 tips and common mistakes
Hiring your first sales rep: 10 tips and common mistakes
By Michael Silagadze on January 2nd, 2013 in Recruiting, Sales, Startups
How many times have you been at an event and met someone who gave you the pitch “I have this great idea, I just need someone to build it for me” or some variation of that?
This has become such a cliche in startup circles that it’s almost cringe-worthy. If all someone has is an idea then they’ve basically got nothing. As the old Edison quote goes “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”

How to prepare a good PowerPoint in 30 minutes
How to prepare a good PowerPoint in 30 minutes
As I mentioned last week, during the case analysis stage at OCMC, the case teams have only 30 minutes to analyze the case and prepare an effective PowerPoint presentation that will wow the judges. This is a daunting task! How do you make a whole seven slide PowerPoint that will set you apart in just 30 minutes?

Little Bit on the stage
I attended a great networking event lately, organized by “Positive
Fabulous Women’s” group. There was a speaker who challenged everybody to do
their elevator speech. He asked for some volunteers & I had to challenge myself
& raise my hand up.
Although I was not ready, he asked me to come up the stage. My heart started to beat fast, thinking what did I just get
myself into. But I was very eager to do it. I wanted him to challenge me
& to put me on the spot.
So there I go, up the stage, my heart beating fast & my
hands starting to sweat.
As I was handed the microphone, I lost my train of thought…
I thought I had it all in my head, but I lost it…So through my time on the stage, he of course gave me great
tips. Good constructive criticism is what I was looking for. And I knew, I
would learn…
Here’s what I learnt:
- Not only that public speaking is a great skill, but you can learn it…
- Start early. The minute you know you are shy. “Oh, I won’t go” because you are scared or shy, indicates that you should actually do it.
- Lesson in life- anything you want to do, do it NOW! Go through the process, beat it and become victory of it.
Finally, people always ask me, how come you have so much
energy? The reason is because I know I have so much to learn during my time
here. I have so much to offer and I am ready to embrace it. So come on and join
us…

Presentation Skills in real life…
I was chatting with someone who recently, got the
task to fundraise for local community.
While she was originally up for the role, she had no
clue on the amount of work she has do to.
So after we spoke, I was reflecting back…
You see, when there is an event, it takes a lot of
hard work, attention to detail, personal skills, perseverance and coordination to
make it run smoothly. Those who are wedding planners, event managers, videographers,
photographers, musicians & Master of Ceremony- they have a very tough job. To
be able to arrange a successful event, big or small, it’s not that easy. But that’s
not the point.
So my friend got this new task to ask for
fundraising for the charity organization.
Her first couple of days, she got rejected… And it
was not a nice way of being rejected, but rather, without consideration to her.
It was rejection added with being rude, even though, she is very polite and
approachable
This is where presentation skills come into play. If
she had practiced and done some sort of public speaking skills in her past, she
would feel more confident to promote the company’s event and hence, share with others
on how they could benefit by contributing.
Now that she has this responsibility, she is getting a bit scared…
You see, the same experience can also be share with
other consultants and sales people. These people, if they are good, they are
very confident (by that I don’t mean pushy or arrogant) in what they have to
offer. Those who truly believe in success, also know that public speaking is
primordial.
- This skill, can help you in your job interview and land the dream job.
- The same skill, can help land you the major client account your competitor has.
- And the same skill, can make a woman feel more confident in saying NO to suggestions that are presented to her. And this my friend, can help you sometimes in situations of Life or Death.
Whatever ever it is you want to get, having
presentation skills will help you. Trust me.
